Syndactyly FAQ: Choosing a Hand Surgeon
Choosing the hand doctor is a very important decision. While there is no one right way to choose a hand surgeon, there are some things you should consider. The first thing to consider is the surgeon’s qualifications to operate on the hand: is he or she board-certified in hand surgery? The highest certification that a doctor can have in hand surgery is called the Certificate of Added Qualifications in Hand Surgery. Do not be afraid to ask questions when you are choosing a hand surgeon: it is your child’s hand and it’s a very important decision. If the surgeon does not want to answer questions about his or her qualifications, seek another surgeon. The second thing to consider is the type practice of the hand surgeon. Does the surgeon do only hand surgery or is hand surgery something they only do occasionally or in addition to other types of surgery?
